Make Music, Your Music.
Secrets Successful Composers WON'T Tell You!!!
I'm probably a marked man for making this video. As people are graduating, leaving school and getting ready for life in the real-world here is my tuppence worth about common misconceptions within earning money in the music industry. But also some facts that may surprise you that us longer-in-the-tooth-composers are perhaps scared to share?

A trait that intertwines the senses, experiencing the world in a different way. In this 'Adventures in Sounds' mini-doc, Alice Allen delves into the fascinating world of Synaethsesia (or Synthesthesia as it's spelt in the USA). We hear from musician Seonaid Aitken, who sees colours simultaneously as she hears sounds, matches musical notes to specific colours, she explains the inspiring ways Syn...

Hidden String Sample TREASURES from CROW HILL
Fantastic insight in to the progression of stage monitoring and breaking down each topic with great explanation - Thank you 👏👏
😮
Left handed basses with the strings upside down???!
Jo Webb is such a tech goat & a underrated guitarist synthist ❤️
Sounds RAD!
Always incredibly helpful. You’re top notch, amigo.
Do you actually use that Braun Nizo 2056 Super-8 film camera?! She's a real beauty!
Can you send your own samples/live audio to this VST?
So... With inhear, artists are like... Deaf ? There is mic for them to hear the audience?
Amazing how things have changed over the years. Great video. Really interesting. 👍
Wow that's encouraging that you don't read music, and can still compose - I struggle with standard notation, and I let it get me very self critical at times...
This sounds so fun! Unfortunately small string gestures continues to be the only VST I own that regularly crashes my DAW, so am taking a breather from Crow Hill 😢
Have you sent in a ticket. This sounds like something system specific as the platform we use is used by many companies and therefore is very stable. Submit a request via our faq page. We have so few support tickets in certain you’ll get a quick response!
In both au and vst?
Yes! 👊
studio one for playback?? i'm curious the thought process behind that
(clenching teeth as Henson pathologises the level of compositional success he wasn’t able to attain) (for that matter small time sample vendors probably think Henson is “mental” too)
It's collecting your data everytime you plug it to internet, all of your vocal takes, instruments takes, the way you use plug-ins, to train those AI models
Apologies if I've already said this, but these videos feel like meeting a very special friend down the pub for a catch-up, always surprised but delighted to be in their company and grateful for them sharing their wisdom.
Thanks Christian, for a another of your great and honest insights to the composing world. Always gives me food for thought. I have tracks in music libraries and have been lucky to have my music used in thousands of shows around the world and enjoyed the royalties that come with that. Would love to take it to the next level and hearing your wise words, has expedited my efforts in making more connections. Thanks for all your posts. Wish you continued success, health and happiness. Kevin
Just a question... You elude to the 'modulation wheel' that routes through to a real-time granular synth, intensifying the audio. As you are using a separate controller for this, the question I have is 'is there a keyboard command to implement the modulation effect for those of us who don't have an external controller? Bought this on Saturday, absolutely love it!!! Thank you Crow, you literally rock!!!
Fantastic video! Absolutely awesome to see the behind the scenes of a big tour. How cool to have a monitor engineer looking after your IEMs! So cool!
To get the full gyroscope effect, play it on your lap init.
Nowadays, everything is about being an expert. Wow! Is just having basic, well-consolidated knowledge not enough?
Great interview! And generous participants!
Beautiful! Master Class! I’m also happy to see my technique to trigger legato is not so unusual after all! 😊😊😊
Secrets successful composers won’t tell you: study music, for start.
thanks for not playing any take that.
I am a bit disappointed with the assumptions about the unexpected effect of the music in Rosemary's Baby. Polanski and Komeda worked together since Polanski's first film and both knew perfectly well what effect they wanted to achieve. When working on Rosemary's Baby Komeda was already a star of European jazz, he had his own jazz band, composed music for over 60 films and composed Ballet Etudes. Mia Farrow: she was a perfect fit for the film and her voice is exactly what her character was supposed to have - again a planned action. I am very happy with Christian's enthusiasm, but composing excellent music is not accidental - unfortunately it requires knowledge and practice. Which I wish to everyone :-)
I''ve written and played all styles from pop, jazz, Afro-Latin to classical. Obviously I prefer a real instrument where possible but there are situations where that isn't possible or desirable from a production perspective. The solution for me for years now has been Pianoteq. Modelled I appreciate, but actually better sounding than most sampled instruments and far more flexible. I'd add a little production trick of my own. Whatever you use, play the other instrument tracks in a room with an actual piano and close mic and record the cavity for use as a subtle reverb. Pianos, especially concert grands, resonate and sing with the other instruments and this can have the effect of somehow putting them all in the same space. It's a very slight difference but once you try it you'll notice it.
A wonderful monologue filled with vulnerable truth. As a Canadian composer who’s managed a “hugely successful” growth inside a fulfilling career as a writer, arranger, orchestrator, coffee fetcher and producer, I have no unfettered criticism, as you might suggest I possibly could have. Your descriptions of silent or thin veil of hierarchy within the different pillars of music industry is super accurate. In fact everything you say is accurate almost to a fault a harsh truth. Which is why I must share how I made my composing success deliver beyond my wildest imagination - oh, whoops…gotta go and crank out another fully realized demo on spec for a wildly successful old friend who’s called with an idea of making something grand, swinging hard, or epically emotional. It’s always something! The secret of musical success is, I’d guess, are the secret pieces that are earned by the interns, assistants and fellow composers who build trust and respect for a peer based knowledge (and thus contact) sharing in the physical “reel” world. Thank you for sharing so much via RUclips. You truly are a maverick of honesty and experienced career wisdom. I enjoy every moment you give of yourself on your channel. Your words resonate and sound as good as a general midi sound running through a Neve channel. All the best!
You're wrong about Irving Berlin. He could only play in F# - probably because that key is the only one that visually isolates the pentatonic scale 12356. On all the black keys.
I can imagine a situation where casual listeners (and there are an awful lot) will use AI constructs to just dial up something they feel like listening to at any given time without caring whether it's AI generated or original. It's really just a step onwards from saying to your voice-activated thingy "play music for sleep/study/party" and it searching tags. I popped in on a neighbour recently and said "ah, you like Debussy?" She said she didn't know anything about Debussy she'd just said "play some relaxing piano music". I doubt hearing it will inspire her to look at the track listing and investigate the classical impressionists but that isn't a criticism of her.
What this video taught me: Get your ducks in a row (11:50)! 😂🦆🦆🦆 P. S.: "In a world where it's illegal to disagree" - really? Well, I disagree with that notion and I'm pretty sure that disagreement is not illegal.
How did you do that? As soon as you mentioned cooking programmes and millionaire, it's like you became the amalgamation of Clarkson, Greg Wallace and Heston Blumenthal.
Pretty much spot on from my experience.👍
Pfft... That was a waste of pixels. You gotta show something of substance if you want to tease people. Even the crows in my neighborhood know that.
Ah!!!... You just gave the game away!!😅😂 That said - great tips - ultra accurate and realistic view. For my endeavours in such areas as a composer - House, mortgage paid, studio to die for, kids secure, holidays etc etc... paid... doing just that. Gotta be realistic - see where the bucks really lie. People skills are a must - But I've always said - it's the music you make, how fast you can make it - and how well you can listen into what is stated as being required - often - most often - not what it appears to be at first read!! - that speaks for itself in terms of appeal within the industry. Great monolog :)
Just bought it. Doddle to download and install. Great idea, perfect execution and sounds and looks beautiful. I hope you'll be releasing more little treats like this. Perfect for quick composing. I also love the fact that there are no invasive, bloaty, buggy installer apps to download. Pease keep to the direct download formula. Upward and onward Crows....
This kind of video needs doing more. It gives you an appreciation of what artists and other performers actually have to do to bring you that fantastic performance. By artists, I don't just mean the ones on the ticket or the musicians because all of the support staff are artists in their own right. Fascinating insight. Thank you.
Having gone through the meat grinder of advertising music, Chris is 100% right. There is nothing there, kids, except for exploitation and a part of the industry that’s being replaced by AI.
He's so fixated on the screen, keyboard and cosmic sounds that he's blissfully unaware of the alien scoutcraft behind him that is about to abduct him for prolonged sexperimentation
Just bought it this morning ! Excellent for music score, it fits really well ! Thank you 🙏 ! Again exceptional vst
Jesus Christ !!! I want on of those things in my living room !
thanks a lot for making it available for everyone now - you guys rock!
My CPU is gonna have a blast with this one :(
I have a Mother-32 and is definitely amazing for that classic Moog sound, but it all depends on your workflow. In my opinion, the midi option on the Mother-32 provides the option for performing the device with a midi keyboard while the patchbay enables users to utilize Mother-32’s modular capabilities. Gateway into the modular synth world in my opinion.
Great video as always Christian and yet again so perfectly timed! I just graduated from my mentorship and one of the last lessons we had with out teacher was on business management 101 specifically because so many composers these days can be musically excellent, but struggle with networking, taxes (blech) and diversifying your income/investments. If I can offer forward a broad strokes overview of what I learned; our main theme was dont be on the "No Plan, Plan." 1:Make some small actionable steps. Where do you want to be in 3 months, 6 months, a year? Make a plan on how to get there and break it up into weekly or even daily steps. 2: Whats your brand? What makes you unique? Why should people hire you over anyone else? Put your best foot forwards. 3: Your Network = Your Net-worth. As you have said and others in the comments, Networking is absolutely key. Reach out to other composers, try to find events or forums or groups anywhere you can and make yourself known and become friends. You never know where (or who) your next gig could come from. 4: Diversify. Personally I do some voice acting, sound design, and am trying to get better at orchestration, notation and arrangement and mixing and mastering. Im in my current internship with a composer now not because Im NOT all that great of a composer, (yet haha) but I come from an audio engineering background and got noticed because so few upcoming composers have that skill set to mix and master or set up a recording session. Make use of your current talents and always be working on new ones! Thanks to you all and Thank you Christian for such a wonderful community! Been following you for years along my journey so far and your videos have always been of a great help! Cheers Y'all!
Times move on and not every instrument of worth needs to be NKS compatible 😂
So glad to see this back - not only for the beautiful sound, but the fact that its much more accessible to those of us who do not 'do music for a living'. (you know I'm looking at you , people releasing $1000 orchestral libraries) . Love you. Love your work Crow Hill crew.
F@@k YES!! Thank you so much!!!!!!
